Learning through play: literacy

Learning to be Superstar Readers

Research has shown that children need to have a thousand books read to them before they become independent readers. We would like all our children to develop into enthusiastic readers when they go to school, as reading skills are fundamental to all areas of learning. We promote literacy throughout our nursery in our play activities, through environmental print, story times, role play, nursery rhymes, games and small world toys.

It is very important for parents/carers to read books and stories to their child every day. This is one of the most significant ways you can support your child’s learning. Books can be borrowed from your local library, or from Nursery. We have a popular Bedtime Stories library – children can borrow a book every day if they wish- and a collection of lovely storysacks which are available to borrow for a week. Other literacy focused events include Book Bug activities and Stay and Play days.
